Populous Wins Incheon Stadium Design for 2014 Asian Games

Year 2014 will be the year of Asian Games at Incheon in South Korea.

While millions of dollars go into building superb infrastructure for the games

by governments and countries, a new design for the main stadium

at the games has gone a step ahead. The competition-winning design

of the main stadium for the 17th Asian games at Incheon shows what

sustainable design could do to help.
The stadium will hold 70,000 people for the main event in 2014.

The special bit is that it can come down to a single sided grandstand

for 30,000 after that, as a People’s Park for the city of Incheon.

International architecture firm Populous that was HOK Sport Venue Event

formerly, is into designing Incheon stadium along with a South Korean firm

Heerim Architects and Planners.

Officials from Populous say the stadium design is based on an asymmetrical

configuration, with the main corporate and management facilities located on

its `permanent’ western side. A `lighter’ part will on the Eastern side will have

the temporary modular seating structure that can disappear after the games.

This way, they say the stadium structure integrate into the local landscape.
